When I was going through one of the darkest periods of my life,
you were there to share stories
and songs and wisdom and love.

I live too far away to be a valuable volunteer. But up here in Toronto, I am working on setting up a literacy program for First Nations people.
It is you who planted the seed and you who I continually return to at any time of the day to listen to Wisdom of the Elders.

Perhaps some day we can
sit in the circle and share stories. Until then......

Mission Statement:

With a mission of Native American cultural preservation, education and race reconciliation, WOTE records, preserves, and shares oral history, cultural arts, and messages of guidance from exemplary indigenous elders, tribal historians, storytellers, and song carriers. We do this to regenerate the greatness of traditional indigenous cultural values among today's and future generations of native peoples. In an effort of reconciliation between Indian and non-Indian, we also share these teachings with all races of mankind, using public radio and documentary production, publishing, and other educational venues.

Sometimes we’ll share excerpts from gifted elders, tribal historians and storytellers. Our newsletters are sent by e-mail. If you do not have e-mail, we mail them to you.

We will launch the Friends of Wisdom of the Elders web page to acknowledge our members of Friends of Wisdom of the Elders. You will learn about their traditional cultural values, many of which have been obscured by popular misconception. You’ll appreciate the wise and distinctive voices and stories, and rare photography, maps and art that will embellish the pages of our website. But, most important, you will know that you have supported our efforts to provide valuable programming to our state, our region and our nation. And you have helped us fulfill our mission of cultural preservation, education and race reconciliation.

You will help us fulfill our mission and our vision.

Raymond DeMallie, an expert in the ethnographic research and the ethnohistorical method, and Director of the American Indian Studies Research Institute at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, speaks of the Wisdom of the Elders project:

They succeed admirably in bringing together the perspectives of scholars—Native and non-Native—with Native Americans from each nation along the trail. In my mind, these programs are a model of integration of scholarly and grass-roots perspectives, and they forcefully bring to listeners’ attention the continued presence and vitality of Native peoples in the U.S. today.

As a FoWOTE member, you will develop greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity of American Indian oral history and cultural arts still thriving among more than 550 nations in America today. You will learn more about traditional indigenous cultural values which have been obscured by history and misunderstanding. Most important, you’ll know you are supporting WOTE’s mission of American Indian cultural preservation, education and race reconciliation.
